Territory and Climate
Our territory has always been a traditional holiday venue. The sea and the coastline fascinate, and the natural scenery captivates the imagination for its many contrasts.
Such richness of images and colour enables you continuously to experience new itineraries, each one revealing infinite changes of landscape and a succession of fascinating and unique places to visit.
Sardinia in fact, is a land that is distinguished for its large variety of places and cultures, each different from the others, but with the common element of sea and coasts uniting them.
Venturing inland, at each stop you’ll be able to admire the strongly contrasting landscapes that nature displays there. You can pass from long beaches of the finest sand to hidden inlets and coves, from vastly extended plains to soft rolling hills, to sharp, rugged granite cliffs dropping steeply to the sea, shaped by the constant activity of water and wind erosion.
Archaeology and Monuments
Sardinia is particularly rich in archaeological monuments which are unique to this place and an important means of presenting Sardinia to the world.
The most representative monuments are the ‘nuraghe’, present almost only in Sardinia, with some very rare exceptions elsewhere. These splendid monuments, with their backdrop of the sea or the wild countryside, make for a unique calling card.
The area of Gallura is dense in archaeological prehistoric remains, many of which are still largely intact.
Moving inland in Gallura, there are various itineraries that can be followed to discover the roots of the Sardinian civilisation, with the so called Megalithic Circles, dating back to the Neolithic Age, around 3,000 B.C.
There are also many examples of Romanesque architecture to be discovered throughout the whole territory of Gallura.
Often the geographical or strategic position of some monuments means they can be found only with the help of an expert guide. This has no doubt contributed to the safeguarding and the conservation over the centuries of these important historical sites.
Sacred Art
There are countless examples of sacred art present in the Gallura territory, from imposing basilicas to tiny country churches. Spread around the whole territory, they are the frequent destination of devoted worshippers and wayfarers alike, all attracted by the beauty and simplicity of such works of art.
Among the most important churches of Gallura, some examples are particularly worthy of note.
- A visit to the Basilica of Saint Semplice, martyr and patron saint of Gallura, celebrated in the month of May, is a must for those devoted to this saint.
- Don’t miss the church dedicated to St. Peter, which is the bishop’s diocese of the Olbia – Tempio province.
- Located in the centre of Olbia, is St. Paul’s, where, besides the original small church, built to pay homage to the saint, you can visit the more recent basilica, where characteristic and unique Christian rites are celebrated
